Most towns have “tourist traps” that pull in people from all over, which we avoid because as locals they’re “obvious.” Plenty of people live near Washington DC without ever having visited the Washington Monument. Plenty of people live in Greater New York but haven’t gotten around to visiting the Statue of Liberty. Maybe it’s time to visit those places.
If your home is in the West, you’re within close driving distance of countless ghost towns and dude ranches, not to mention Las Vegas, as well as all the splendid natural beauty of the West, including the Grand Canyon and just about the entire state of Utah. If you live in the East, some Civil War or American Revolution battle field is a drivable distance from you.
The South has Graceland and the Alamo. The North has Mount Rushmore. The country is full of famous writers or other famous people whose homes have been lovingly preserved. You can abide by your own schedule, and see not just the site you’re headed toward but the odd, unexpected discovery you might not have even seen on the maps.
The drive across country from coast to coast is an experience everyone should have at least once. Take a week, though it can be done in less. It’s beautiful just watching the landscape change from one terrain to the next.
Be sure to carry extra water, a first aid kit, coolant or antifreeze, and have a charged cellphone. Know the number of AAA, and it certainly doesn’t hurt to be a member.
